Technician License

My 16 year old son Robert and I really like Hamsphere. We have made contacts from all over the globe, and this has inspired us to go for our technician license. I found a local ham group, but before I contact them I wanted to get the ARRL book. Now all we need are a couple  of 2 meter handhelds. That way we can talk to each other here in the Upper Peninsula where there are many back packing trails. Also echolink can be used, and when we go into the bigger cites, we can use the repeaters to make QSO’s.
